In July 2019, the Prescription Drug Affordability Board was authorized by the General Assembly (Chapter 692, Acts of 2019).

In conjunction with the Prescription Drug Affordability Stakeholder Council, the Board identifies circumstances under which the cost of a prescription drug product may create or has created affordability challenges for the State health care system and patients; and establishes criteria that the Board will use to set an upper payment limit for a prescription drug product after considering certain factors (Code Health-General Article, sec. 21-2C-01 through 21-2C-15).

The Board consists of five members and five alternate members appointed to five-year terms (Code Health-General Article, sec. 21-2C-03).
