In June 2017, the Task Force to Study Bicycle Safety on Maryland Highways was authorized (Chapters 835 & 836, Acts of 2017).

The Task Force studied and made recommendations on bicycle safety, including the adequacy and capacity of bike lanes, paths, and protected cycle tracks; implementation of Complete Streets strategies that facilitate safe travel for all bicyclists; and traffic control devices relating to bicycle operation and behavior towards bicycles. It also considered public education and outreach concerning bicycles operating on highways, and funding sources to support and encourage bicycle safety. Further, the Task Force considered how bike lanes, paths, and protected cycle tracks effect street parking and the flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic; how utilities and other infrastructure are located along bike paths, lanes, and protected cycle tracks; and what best practices would assure access to retail, residential, commercial and other points adjacent to bike lanes, paths, and protected cycle tracks.

On December 18, 2017, the Task Force submitted its report to the Govenor and General Assembly.

Authorization for the Task Force ended May 31, 2018.
