The Maryland Clean Car and Energy Policy Task Force began its work in June 2007 (Chapters 111 & 112, Acts of 2007). To improve Maryland's air quality, the Task Force reviewed State energy policies and considered ways to develop viable alternative fuels and vehicle efficiency. The Task Force studied: what neighboring states are doing about vehicle emission standards; regulatory actions taken by California and the federal Environmental Protection Agency relating to vehicle emission standards; and emerging energy technologies.

Authorization for the Task Force ended December 31, 2010.
