In July 2020, the Task Force on the Economic Future of Western Maryland was formed by the General Assembly (Chapter 207, Acts of 2020).
The Task Force first studied the current economic situation in Western Maryland. Then, it considered and made recommendations for improving the local economies of Allegany, Garrett and Washington counties. This included how to strengthen technology-based and tourism-based industries in Western Maryland, and how to overcome barriers to the expansion of small businesses in the area.
To the Governor, the Senate President, and the House Speaker, an interim report was submitted on February 16, 2021, and a final report was submitted on January 6, 2022.
Authorization for the Task Force was to end June 30, 2021, but was extended to December 31, 2021 (Chapters 413 and 414, Acts of 2021).
