Report to General Assembly on demographic information, prerequisites for employment, salary range, & average salary for 9-1-1 specialists, as well as plan to provide implicit bias training due Dec. 31, 2021 (Chapters 378 & 379, Acts of 2021).
In June 2018, the Commission to Advance Next Generation 9-1-1 Across Maryland was authorized by the General Assembly (Chapters 301 & 302, Acts of 2018).
The 9-1-1 phone number can be called to request emergency assistance or report an emergency situation.
Maryland's original 9-1-1 System was authorized in 1979, and carried out by the Emergency Number Systems Board (now Maryland 9-1-1 Board). That 9-1-1 system is based on landline phones. Next generation technology provides more accurate caller location information and more efficient response.
The Commission was charged with studying and making recommendations about the development and implementation of a next generation 9-1-1 statewide emergency communications system. Further, the Commission was to examine all costs for planning, testing, and operating a next generation system, as well as to consider the best practices, policies, and procedures for public safety telecommunications.
Authorization for the Commission was to end June 30, 2020, but was extended to June 30, 2022 (Chapter 506, Acts of 2020).
