CHARLES W. GILCHRIST (1936-1999) County Executive, Montgomery County, December 4, 1978 to December 1, 1986.
Member, State Senate, representing Montgomery County (District 17), 1975-78. Member, Joint Committee on Legislative Ethics, 1976-78; Maryland Commission on Intergovernmental Cooperation.
Member, Pension Study Committee, 1975-77; Task Force on Collective Bargaining for Public Employees, 1976-77; Commission to Study the Residential Needs of the Retarded, 1976-77; Commission on the Evaluation and Coordination of Aggressive Offender Treatment, 1976-78.
Born in Washington, DC, November 12, 1936. Attended John Quincy Adams Elementary School, Washington, DC; St. Albans School, Washington, DC; Williams College, A.B., magna cum laude (Phi Beta Kappa), 1958; Harvard Law School, LL.B., 1961. Admitted to Maryland Bar, 1962. Attorney, later ordained an Episcopal priest. Member, American, Maryland State, and District of Columbia Bar Associations. Served in U.S. Army. Virginia Theological Seminary, 1986. Associate Pastor, St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, Washington, DC, 1990. Executive Director, Cathedral Shelter of Chicago, an Episcopal agency providing residential rehabilitation and treatment for addicts, plus outpatient and community services, 1991-96. Former treasurer, Montgomery County Democratic State Central Committee. Delegate, Democratic National Convention, 1996. Director of Operations, New Song Urban Ministries, Baltimore, 1996-99. Married; three children, two grandchildren. Died in Baltimore, Maryland, June 24, 1999.
The Gilchrist Center for Cultural Diversity, Montgomery County, was named to honor Mr. Gilchrist in 2001. At The Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus, the campus's original building in Rockville was dedicated as Charles W. Gilchrist Hall in April 2006.
