Within the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Office (Region 3). is responsible for federal environmental programs in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The Environmental Protection Agency’s Chesapeake Bay Program Office is housed within the Region 3 Office.

Federal environmental programs include control of air and water pollution; regulation of toxic substances, pesticides and drinking water; protection of wetlands; management of hazardous waste; cleanup of hazardous waste sites; and some regulation of radioactive materials. The Office oversees compliance and enforcement, inspection, engineering reviews, ambient monitoring, analysis of environmental trends, environmental planning, pollution prevention, risk assessment, and education and outreach.

The Office and its partner pollution control agencies in the states regulate more than 21,000 air pollution sources; 12,000 water pollution sources; and 425 hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal facilities. Together, the agencies investigate 1,500 potential hazardous waste dump sites and cleanup 165 sites included in or proposed for the Superfund National Priorities List.
